Fun in Action continued to grow in the year up to September 2011 by setting up a further 21 new friendships between adult volunteers and disadvantaged children.
Over the next two years each of these newly matched children will feel the benefit of reliable weekly meetings with their befriender, bringing encouragement and support in whatever form is needed. We also added 31 new children to our waiting list in the year.
By 30th September 2011 we were also supporting 50 one-to-one long term friendships between volunteers and children. Overall this involves volunteers providing over 200 hours of one-to-one attention to children each weekend. We were also supporting 42 “Lifelong Friends” (ongoing open ended relationships between volunteers and children which we encourage and support when the more formal befriending has ended) and we had 40 needy children (27 boys + 13 girls) on our waiting list for a volunteer befriender.
In addition we organised and ran 4 group outings this year for all involved with the charity.
These included a summer barbecue in Stanmer Park and a Christmas party. Over the last 3 years in yearly feedback reports, parents and children identified positive improvements against each of our ‘outcomes’ attributable to a befriender’s support (these are Increased confidence & feelings of self-worth, Improved family & peer relationships Expanding horizons and Positive changes at school).
