Fun in Action Easter Picnic 2011 smashes records! What an Easter Picnic it was for 2011. With record temperatures, record attendance and record amounts of food, Fun in Action celebrated Easter with record enthusiasm.
As England basked in the summer sunshine this spring, over 100 people came to celebrate Easter with Fun in Action. 111 people turned out at Preston Park including 52 children, 29 parents and 28 befrienders and 3 staff.
Our buffet table groaned under the huge amounts of gorgeous food brought to this year’s picnic. People really made an effort and all sorts of dishes were homemade including a wonderful birthday cake for Anne, the Project Manager, whose birthday it was. Although we made a valiant effort to eat all of the dishes, there were still delicious leftovers which went home with those families most in need.
After feasting we had our annual Easter Egg Hunt in the beautiful walled garden behind Preston Manor House. The eggs had been hidden amongst hundreds of spring flowers in full bloom by a few adults who snuck off unnoticed by the children. Once the hunt was announced, the children bounded across Preston Park and quickly got to work searching for chocolate. They were very thorough and within 20 minutes had found all of the eggs. Then the eggs were handed in to the communal basket, the children all took position in the grass, and the eggs were tossed for everyone to catch.
With chocolate chops and sticky fingers the kids (and adults) made their way back to our Picnic Area under Preston Park’s Clock Tower to compete in heats of Egg and Spoon, 3 Legged and Piggy Back Races. The races were very popular as Brighton College and Capital International had donated chocolate lambs and Kinder eggs to the charity for prizes for the races. Such a large amount was donated that every child won a treat and there were still more to give away!
The children also blew bubbles, played football, tag, and Frisbee running off their energy. The children played so well with each catching up with friends they have made at the charity’s groups events. The adults relaxed in the sun and like the children, chatted with others they have met at Fun’s outings.
Before everyone left we sang Happy Birthday to Anne and managed to find space for just a ‘small slice of cake’. It was a great day; one that will be hard to top.
