Children in Year 7 & 8 at Blatchington Mill School in Hove have been busy raising money to help disadvantaged local children this summer term. Over the course of a week they gave up their free time to sell cakes, organise bric-a-brac stalls and set up sporting events to raise money for Fun in Action. On completing all their hard work the children in Year 7NF wrote a very special letter to our office saying: "Just before Christmas our form did a charity event called the £1 challenge and we decided to choose you to donate the money we made to. For our ‘£1 Challenge’ we held a tin can alley in our form room, where people from our year and the year above came to our form room and threw balls at piled up cans to win money. We made money from this but we thought we could do better so some people in our form went carol singing and raised an extra £35. We chose you because we believe that the things that you are doing are wonderful and we know that the money that came from us will be used well and it will go to helping more people who need it." Fun's Chief Executive, Anne McLaren, thanked the children and the school’s Citizenship Co-ordinator, K. Johnston and said, "Young people are often portrayed negatively in the media and the general public may only hear about what they do when there has been a problem. The fact that these young people got together and researched, planned and executed this fundraising venture for the benefit of their more disadvantaged peers shows a sense of citizenship and public duty which is to be loudly applauded." The money will help fund our traditional Summer Barbecue which is much enjoyed by all the children, parents and volunteers on the scheme.
